Survive Finals Week with These Tips!
It's just about that time, guys. Finals week for MS&T begins on Monday, May 11th. While you're already probably beginning to feel the stress of finals and spending every spare moment studying like you've never studied before, there are ways to reduce the stress and improve your study sessions. So, The Lodges at Rolla is sharing with you some super helpful tips to help you survive finals week!
1. Prioritize Your Study Schedule
“Failing to plan is planning to fail.” If you just start studying without a plan, you are likely to overlook important areas and over-study unimportant subjects. Plan your week, plan your day, and plan what to study. You already know when your finals are scheduled for. Take your schedule into consideration as you begin tackling subjects. Do you have a Statistics final on Monday and a Geophysics final on Thursday? It's probably best to plan your study schedule with Statistics as a first priority!
2. Choose Your Study Space Carefully
Do not just start studying anywhere. Find a quiet, orderly place. Your dorm room or apartment might not be the most ideal place to study, especially if you share housing with others. With all commotion of roommates and other distractions so easily available, it would be too easy to get off-track with your studies. Instead, try to find your “own” corner of the library. Everyday, get there early and start studying. A peaceful environment will be an immeasurable help to your concentration.
3. Say YES to Study Groups
While some study groups can become more of a distraction than useful, finding the right group of focused dedicated students to study with can be a real benefit. The best way to use study groups is for review. Learn the material by yourself, and review it by explaining the subject to the study group. Study groups can also be a great resource if you don't understand the subject or are unsure of what you should be studying for in any given subject. Bonus points if you've got someone in your study group who has already taken the class and can give you first hand experience and insight!
4. Take Short Study Breaks
Studying non-stop is actually not helpful. Trying to study for really long periods of time with no breaks can actually hinder your ability to retain information, thus rendering all that study time as useless.
A trick to remember is that not all study time is equal. In other words, one hour of solid study time is not quite as effective as three study times of 20 minutes with five to ten minute breaks in between. In either instance, you're still studying for one hour, but in the second case you're allowing a brain break and your concentration and retention levels improve by taking short breaks. During these short breaks you can exercise, eat, rest, or do some other activity that takes your mind off the study material.
5. Eat Healthy, Sleep Plenty, Exercise!
Due to the feeling of being under the gun, many students tend to eat more unhealthily during finals week. With the shortage of time, they often eat whatever is quick and easy. While junk food may give you instant energy, it can leave you feeling drained and slump-ish once the sugar high burns off. Eating healthy food will increase your concentration, retention, and provide longer lasting sustainable energy to stay focused and alert.
Sleep is another important function you shouldn't be skimping on. While it may be tempting to pull an all-nighter, during finals week you need to be well rested so you can function on all cylinders. Getting plenty of sleep will help you study better. Even though you will have less study time, the time you do have will be worth more.
Vigorous exercise breaks can help relieve the stress that makes finals week so…stressful! You don't have to go all out and hit the gym for a 2 hour workout session. During one of your study breaks taking brisk walks, runs, and allotting time for other sports can be a good way to let off extra energy and regain your concentration.
Take Care of Yourself!
