5 Health Tips for Staying on Track during the Holidays
For many, the holidays can be a really tough time for dieting and exercising. With all the yummy foods at all the fun parties, and all the traveling, it can be very easy to get off track on your healthy lifestyle. Without a plan, it’s almost inevitable that you’ll fall into temptation. So, this week, The Lodges at Rolla is sharing with you 5 health tips for staying on track during the holidays!
1. Find Balance
The holidays are always packed with events and gatherings that offer so many tempting delicious goodies. In times like these it can be hard to stick to your healthy eating habits, especially with people constantly offering you treats. Try to stick with the 80/20 rule – eat healthy 80% of the time, but allow some room for those delicious treats 20% of the time. This will let you maintain a healthy lifestyle, while allowing yourself to indulge just a little! But be sure to stick to the 80/20 rule, otherwise you may end up spiraling and overindulging.
2. Keep Up with Your Exercise Routine
With traveling and changes in your work/school routine due to the holidays, it can be easy to put exercise on the back burner. You may have every intention of getting back to it once the holidays have passed, but you’re only doing yourself and your health a disservice by taking a break. Don’t make excuses for not getting in at least 30 mins a day of exercise. While you may not have access to a full gym during the holidays, you can still get out and take a walk or jog. Hold yourself accountable to at least get in 30 minutes of exercise each day… even during the holidays!
3. Drink Plenty of Water
Drinking plenty of water and keeping your body hydrated can be a huge help in preventing you from overindulging on all of the snacks, treats and delicious meals you’ll likely run into during the holidays. Drinking water not only helps to curb your appetite by making you feel fuller for longer, but it also jumpstarts your metabolism and helps your body burn off calories faster! So, a good rule of thumb during the holidays is to ALWAYS be drinking water!
4. Stay rested
Traveling and running around to all the holiday parties can really draw on your energy. You may feel obligated to say yes to every single invite that you get, in an effort to not be rude or seem ungrateful. Just remember, it’s okay to listen to your body when it’s telling you to rest. It’s okay to decline an offer to attend a holiday party. However, if you are that person who loves to attend all the events, just remember to try to aim for 8 hours of sleep. Your busy body will thank you immensely!
5. Plan Ahead
Traveling and family dinners can throw your diet off, unless you plan ahead. Don’t be shy about asking if it’s ok for you to bring a dish. Most hosts gladly welcome the extra help! So, whether it be a veggie or fruit tray, you’ll have a healthy option available there you know you can snack on without breaking your healthy eating plan. If there are healthy options available, you’re less likely to cheat. And think beyond food, too! If you’ll be missing out on your daily exercise routine, plan to take a walk after dinner. You can do that pretty much anywhere!
We hope these quick tips help you keep on track to a healthy you this holiday season! Now that you’ve got these helpful tips in your back pocket, you can enjoy the holiday festivities with confidence, knowing you’re ready to face any temptation that might come your way head on!
